Mulling over your New Year’s resolution list? We’ve got the perfect 2018 goal for you: A Beautiful Lawn! Why are we talking about grass in the heart of winter? Because we know the secret to a lush, lovely outdoor space is Planning Ahead. And we know you’ve been feeling envy, and maybe a touch of guilt, when you see your neighbour’s artful landscaping. You just need to set aside a bit of time, and to come see Cambridge Small Motors.

Some TLC in the spring and a little scheduled maintenance throughout the warm months are all it takes to coax your lawn into becoming the envy of the neighbourhood. As soon as the ground thaws, get out there with a rake and begin removing debris. Go easy, you don’t want to damage the grass just as its waking up, but you don’t want to let it smother, either. Debris can also encourage rot, moss, or pests to take up residence. That’s a whole lotta nope. Got some bald patches? You should invest in seed. Didn’t pull those dandelions, thistles, or wild violets last year? Get them gone ASAP because weeds grow like, well, weeds. The saying exists for a reason. And prepare to keep it up all season, dandelions almost have stealth qualities. Lawn care helps you reach those fitness resolutions, too!

the perfect lawn

Spring is a great time to aerate. This loosens the soil to provide easy access for water and fertilizer to get to the roots of your lawn. As spring gets closer to summer you’ll want to apply fertilizer – we recommend doing so every 6 to 8 weeks throughout warm months. Once spring is truly underway, it’s time to edge the garden beds and walkways. You’ll see immediate results with edging; suddenly the gardens and sidewalk look wider, and tidier. You may have to repeat this step in mid-summer, so keep an eye out.

Take out your calendar and mark down which day you’re going to mow the lawn. Yes, seriously in January, program it in starting in April. A visual reminder to check on your lawn ensures you’ve got room in your schedule to mow, weed, or remove debris. And when you mow your lawn, don’t lower the blade all the way. Grass likes a bit of length to absorb nutrients needed to maintain healthy roots. Plug in your 6-to-8-week fertilization. Working away at the tasks every week keep the overall workload manageable. It’s how your neighbour of the glorious lawn rolls!

That’s all you need to do to get a good start on a great lawn. Make your resolution even easier to uphold with Cambridge Small Motors.
